Questions & Answers about این لیوانها کثیف است.
Why does the sentence use the singular verb است (is) when talking about multiple glasses?
In Farsi, when the subject is inanimate (meaning it is an object or concept, not a person or animal), a plural subject usually takes a singular verb. Since لیوانها (glasses) are inanimate objects, we use the singular verb است instead of the plural هستند (are).
The English translation says "These", but the Farsi word used is این (this). Why don't we use اینها?
When pointing words like این (this) or آن (that) come directly before a noun, they always stay in their singular form. So, we say این لیوانها (literally "this glasses") rather than adding the plural marker to make it اینها.
Should the adjective کثیف (dirty) also be plural since it describes multiple glasses?
No, adjectives in Farsi do not change to match the number of the noun they describe. Whether you are talking about one dirty glass or fifty, the adjective remains exactly the same: کثیف.
