Questions & Answers about همه مادران جوان هستند.
Why is the plural ending -ân used for mothers here instead of -hâ?
While -hâ is the regular plural ending for almost everything, Farsi has a special plural marker for people (and sometimes animals): -ân. So, mâdarân (mothers) is a slightly more formal or elegant way to say mâdarhâ. You will hear both used!
How does the word mâdar change when we add the -ân ending?
Because mâdar ends in a consonant, we simply attach -ân directly to the end to make mâdarân. If the noun ended in a vowel, we would need to use a slightly different version of this ending, like -gân or -yân.
The translation says "all the mothers", but I don't see a word for "the" or "of". How is that shown?
This is done using the invisible Ezafe connector! When you use hame (all) before a noun to mean "all of the [noun]", you connect them with a spoken e or ye sound. So here, it is pronounced hame-ye mâdarân.
Why isn't the adjective javân made plural to match the mothers?
In Farsi, adjectives never take a plural marker, even when describing plural nouns. You just use the base dictionary form javân (young) whether you are talking about one mother or a thousand.
Would the verb hastand change if I used mâdarhâ instead?
No, the verb would still be hastand (they are). Because mothers are people (animate nouns), they strictly require a plural verb regardless of which plural ending (-ân or -hâ) you choose to attach to the noun itself.
