Questions & Answers about همه اینجا هستند.
Why does the sentence use the plural verb هستند (are) when English uses the singular "is" (Everyone is here)?
In English, "everyone" is grammatically singular. In Farsi, when همه means "everyone," it refers to a group of living people (animate beings). Farsi strict rules require subjects representing multiple people to take a plural verb, so we use هستند (they are) instead of the singular است (is).
Since this lesson is about animate plural markers like -ان (-ân), why doesn't همه have a plural ending?
همه is a pronoun meaning "all" or "everyone," so its meaning is inherently plural. Plural endings like -ان (-ân) or -ها (-hâ) are attached to regular singular nouns (like turning "friend" into "friends"), not to words that already mean "all".
How is the final letter in همه pronounced?
The letter ه at the end of همه is a "silent h." Instead of making an "h" sound, it tells you to pronounce the end of the word with a short "e" sound, making it sound like ha-me.
Could I add a pronoun and say همه آنها اینجا هستند (All of them are here)?
Yes, you can! همه آنها اینجا هستند translates to "All of them are here." However, simply saying همه اینجا هستند is the most natural, standard way to say "Everyone is here."
