Questions & Answers about شاید پرواز را لغو کنیم.
How does the word shâyad work in this sentence?
Shâyad means might or maybe. Unlike most verbs, it does not change based on who is doing the action. It always stays as shâyad, and it forces the main verb at the end of the sentence (laghv konim) into the present subjunctive form to show uncertainty.
I learned that the subjunctive usually adds a be- prefix to the verb. Why is there no be- on laghv konim?
Laghv kardan (to cancel) is a compound verb, made of the word laghv and the helper verb kardan (to do). When making the subjunctive for compound verbs, Farsi speakers usually drop the be- prefix because the first word already acts like a prefix. So, instead of laghv bekonim, we just say laghv konim.
Why do we need the word râ after parvâz (flight)?
Râ is a marker used for specific direct objects. Because we are talking about canceling a specific flight (the flight, rather than just any flight), we must put râ right after the noun receiving the action.
There is no word for we (mâ) in this sentence. How do we know who is canceling the flight?
In Farsi, the ending of the verb tells you exactly who is doing the action. The ending -im on konim specifically means we. Because of this built-in clue, saying the actual pronoun mâ is optional and often dropped to sound more natural.
