Questions & Answers about دو پاککن روی میز است.
Why isn't the word for 'eraser' plural if there are two of them?
In Farsi, after numbers, we always use the singular form of the noun. This is why you see پاککن (eraser) in its singular form right after the number دو (two), instead of a plural form.
The English translation says 'are', but the Farsi sentence uses است (is). Why?
In Farsi, when the subject of a sentence is inanimate (not a living person or animal), the verb is usually singular, even if there are multiple items. Since erasers are inanimate objects, we use the singular verb است (is).
How do the words for 'on' and 'desk' connect when spoken?
They are connected using an Ezāfe (a short linking vowel). The word for 'on' is روی and 'desk' is میز. Because روی ends in a vowel, we add a 'ye' sound to connect them, making it ru-ye miz.
Does the word پاککن have a literal meaning?
Yes! It is a compound word. پاک means 'clean' and کن comes from the verb 'to do' or 'to make'. So پاککن literally means a 'clean-maker' or 'doer of cleaning'—which is the perfect way to describe an eraser!
