شانزده پرنده روی درخت است.

Questions & Answers about شانزده پرنده روی درخت است.

Why is پرنده (bird) singular when the English translation says birds?
In Farsi, nouns that come directly after a number are always kept in their singular form. Even though there are شانزده (sixteen) of them, you just say شانزده پرنده (literally: sixteen bird).
The English translation says in the tree, so why does the Farsi sentence use روی (on)?
Different languages use different prepositions for locations. In English, we say birds sit in a tree, but in Farsi, the perspective is that they sit on the branches, so you use روی (on or on top of).
Why is the verb at the end است (is) instead of a plural verb for are?
In Farsi, animals and inanimate objects usually take a singular verb, even when there is more than one. Also, because the noun itself stays singular after a number, the verb simply matches it.
How does this sentence say There are? I don't see a word for there.
Farsi doesn't use a filler word like there to show that something exists in a location. You simply state the subject, the location, and the to be verb at the end: literally, Sixteen bird on tree is.
