Questions & Answers about یک چای، لطفاً.
Does یک mean "one" or "a" here?
It can actually be both! The word یک literally translates to the number "one", but in Farsi, it is very commonly used just like the English indefinite articles "a" or "an". In a café, saying یک چای works perfectly to mean "a tea" or "one tea".
Why does the word for please, لطفاً, have those two little diagonal lines at the top left?
Those two little lines are a special symbol called a "tanwin". It is a feature borrowed from Arabic that makes an "-an" sound. Because of this symbol, you pronounce the word as "lotfan" instead of "lotfa". You will see this ending on several common adverbs in Farsi.
Is it polite to just say "A tea, please" without a verb like "I want"?
Yes, absolutely! Just like in English, conversational Farsi allows you to drop verbs when the context is obvious. When ordering food or drinks, simply naming the item followed by لطفاً is very natural, common, and perfectly polite.
If I wanted to order "a hot tea, please", where would the word for hot go?
In Farsi, adjectives come after the noun they describe, connected by a short "e" sound (called the ezafe). "Hot" is گرم. So, to say "a hot tea", you start with یک, add the noun, the "e" sound, and then the adjective: یک چایِ گرم.
