Questions & Answers about پروندهها روی صندلیها است.
Why is the verb است (is) singular when the subject of the sentence is plural?
In Farsi, when a plural subject is an inanimate object (not a human or animal), the verb is usually singular. Since پروندهها (the files) are objects, we use the singular verb است (is) instead of the plural verb هستند (are).
How does the plural marker ها attach to words ending in the short "eh" sound, like پرونده?
When a word ends in the silent letter ه (which produces the "eh" sound), we do not physically connect the letters. We simply add ها right next to it with a tiny gap (called a semi-space) to keep the ending clear: پروندهها.
Can I use ها to make any noun plural, like صندلیها (chairs)?
Yes, ها is the most common and regular plural marker in Farsi. You can safely add it to the end of almost any noun to make it plural, whether it is a person, an animal, or an everyday object like صندلی (chair).
Does the word روی (on) need an Ezafe to connect it to the chairs?
Yes! Prepositions of place like روی (on) use the Ezafe (a linking vowel) to connect to the noun that follows them. Because روی ends in a vowel sound, the added Ezafe sounds like "ye", making the spoken phrase ru-ye sandali-hâ. This linking sound is rarely written in the Farsi alphabet.
