Why do we use hast (هست) in this sentence instead of ast (است)?
In Farsi, ast is generally used to describe things (like "The professor is tall"). We use hast to show existence or location. Because this sentence tells us where the professor is ("there"), we use the independent existential "is" (hast).
What is the literal meaning of ānjā (آنجا)?
It literally means "that place." It is made by combining the words ān (that) and jā (place). Together, they form the standard Farsi word for "there."
How does this sentence change in everyday spoken Farsi?
In casual speech, the "ā" sound before an "n" often changes to an "u" sound. So ānjā becomes unjā. You will usually hear this sentence spoken as ostād unjā hast or contracted to ostād unjāst.
Does ostād (استاد) only mean "professor"?
While it is the standard word for a university professor, it is also widely used as a respectful title for a master of any craft, art, or highly skilled trade. For a standard primary or high school teacher, you would instead use the word mo'allem.
