Forming Yes/No Questions
In Farsi, the word order for a yes/no question is exactly the same as a normal statement. To mark a sentence as a formal question, simply place the question particle آیا at the beginning.
| whether (question particle) | آیاâyâ |
Notice how the rest of the sentence structure remains unchanged:
| Is this a notebook? | آیا این دفتر است؟âyâ in daftar ast? |
| Is that bag heavy? | آیا آن کیف سنگین است؟âyâ ân kif-e sangin ast? |
| Are you tired? | آیا شما خسته هستید؟âyâ shomâ khaste hastid? |
Answering Yes or No
To answer, begin your response with بله (yes) or نه (no).
| Is your class crowded? | آیا کلاس شما شلوغ است؟âyâ kelâs shomâ shologh ast? |
| Yes, my class is crowded. | بله، کلاس من شلوغ است.bale, kelâs man sholugh ast. |
For a negative answer, remember to use a negative verb:
| Is that a pen? | آیا آن خودکار است؟âyâ ân khodkâr ast? |
| No, that is not a pen. | نه، آن خودکار نیست.na, ân khodkâr nist. |
| Is the key on the table? | آیا کلید روی میز است؟âyâ kelid ruye miz ast? |
| No, the key is inside the car. | نه، کلید داخل ماشین است.na, kelid dâkhel mâshin ast. |
Spoken Farsi and Intonation
In casual spoken Farsi, the word آیا is usually dropped. Instead, you simply use a rising tone of voice at the end of a regular statement to signal that it is a question—much like in casual English ("You're tired?").
You will encounter آیا constantly in written Farsi, making it essential for reading and formal communication.
