Expressing Desire: Wanting to (خواستن)
To express that you want to do something, use the verb خواستن (to want). Unlike باید (must) and شاید (might), خواستن is conjugated to match the subject.
| Pronoun | Verb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| من | میخواهم | I want |
| تو | میخواهی | You (sing.) want |
| او | میخواهد | He/she wants |
| ما | میخواهیم | We want |
| شما | میخواهید | You (pl./form.) want |
| آنها | میخواهند | They want |
Follow the conjugated form of خواستن with your main verb in the present subjunctive.
| I want to learn the Persian language. | من میخواهم زبان فارسی یاد بگیرم.man mikhâham zabân-e fârsi yâd begiram. |
| My brother wants to sell his apartment. | برادرم میخواهد آپارتمانش را بفروشد.barâdaram mikhâhad âpârtemânash râ beforushad. |
Wanting with Compound Verbs
When the main action is a compound verb, only the final verbal part takes the subjunctive form.
| We want to make dinner for tomorrow. | ما میخواهیم برای فردا شام درست کنیم.mâ mikhâhim barâye fardâ shâm dorost konim. |
| They want to marry next year. | آنها میخواهند سال آینده ازدواج کنند.ânhâ mikhâhand sâl-e âyande ezdevâj konand. |
Negation and Questions
To say that you do not want to do something, negate خواستن by adding the prefix نـ (e.g., نمیخواهم). The main verb stays in the subjunctive.
| I do not want to marry. | من نمیخواهم ازدواج کنم.man nemikhâham ezdevâj konam. |
To ask a question, conjugate خواستن for the person you are asking.
| Do you want to study next year? | آیا شما میخواهید سال آینده درس بخوانید؟âyâ shomâ mikhâhid sâl âyande dars bekhânid? |
