Indicating Direction: "Towards"
When describing movement—like floats, dancers, and bands in a lively parade—you need to indicate direction. In Farsi, "towards" is commonly expressed using compound prepositions that combine به (to) with a noun indicating a side or direction.
The three most common phrases for "towards" are به سمت, به طرف, and به سوی. They are interchangeable and link to their destination using the spoken ezafe vowel (-e or -ye).
| The parade is moving towards the city square. |
| The dancers must move towards each other.
| The children released the balloons towards the sky.
These prepositions aren't just for physical travel; they also describe the direction of an action.
| The people are waving the flags towards the musicians. |
You can also use these prepositions with independent pronouns. The structure remains exactly the same, using the ezafe as a bridge.
| He waved the flag towards me, but I did not see it. | او پرچم را به سوی من تکان داد، ولی من آن را ندیدم.u parcham râ be suye man tekân dâd, vali man ân râ nadidam. |
