Unreal Present (Second Conditional)
When talking about a hypothetical or unreal situation in the present—like dreaming about being a millionaire or wishing you could fly—use the second conditional. In Farsi, these sentences start with اگر (if).
The structure has two parts:
- The condition ("If" clause): Uses اگر
- a verb in the Simple Past or Past Continuous.
- The result clause: Uses a verb in the Past Continuous to show what would happen.
Simple Past in the Condition
When the condition describes a state of being or having something, the "If" clause uses a Simple Past verb. The result clause then uses the Past Continuous.
| If I were a millionaire, I would buy a palace. | اگر میلیونر بودم، یک قصر میخریدم.agar milyoner budam, yek qasr mikharidam. |
| If we had wings, we would fly in the sky. | اگر بال داشتیم، در آسمان پرواز میکردیم.agar bâl dâshtim, dar âsemân parvâz mikardim. |
Past Continuous in Both Clauses
If the hypothetical condition focuses on an ongoing action or a regular habit, use the Past Continuous in both clauses.
| If this cat slept less, it would stay thin. | اگر این گربه کمتر میخوابید، لاغر میماند.agar in gorbe kamtar mikhâbid, lâghar mimânad. |
| If they were ruling, they would make better decisions about our economy. | اگر آنها حکومت میکردند، در مورد اقتصادمان تصمیمات بهتری میگرفتند.agar ânhâ hokumat mikardand, dar morede eqtesâdemân tasmimât behtari migereftand. |
Negative Conditions and Results
To express negative unreal ideas, make the verbs negative as usual. Add the نـ prefix for the Simple Past, or place it before the می prefix for the Past Continuous.
| If I were not a liar, I would fulfill your wish. | اگر دروغگو نبودم، آرزوی تو را برآورده میکردم.agar dorugh-gu nabudam, ârezu-ye to râ barâvarde mikardam. |
| If they liked peace, they would not fight. | اگر آنها صلح را دوست داشتند، دعوا نمیکردند.agar ânhâ solh râ dust dâshtand, da'vâ nemikardand. |
