Range Boundaries: از ... تا ...
To express a range or boundary in Farsi, use the paired structure از ... تا ... (from ... to/until ...). This simple framing works exactly like its English equivalent and is incredibly versatile, applying to both physical space and spans of time.
Spatial Boundaries
When talking about a grueling commute or measuring physical distance, place your starting location directly after از and your destination after تا.
| Commuting from Karaj to Tehran is grueling. | رفت و آمد از کرج تا تهران طاقتفرسا است.raft o âmad az karaj tâ tehrân tâqat-farsâ ast. |
| The distance from the factory to my house is very long. | مسافت از کارخانه تا خانهی من خیلی زیاد است.masâfat az kârkhâne tâ khâne-ye man kheyli ziyâd ast. |
Temporal Boundaries
You can use the exact same structure to describe a shift at work, days of the week, or any other timeframe. Place the starting time after از and the ending time after تا.
| The workers are on their feet from morning to night on the production line. | کارگران از صبح تا شب در خط تولید سرپا هستند.kârgarân az sobh tâ shab dar khat-e towlid sarpâ hastand. |
| The employer says that the factory is closed from Saturday to Monday. | کارفرما میگوید که کارخانه از شنبه تا دوشنبه تعطیل است.kârfarmâ migooyad ke kârkhâne az shanbe tâ doshanbe ta'til ast. |
Working with Longer Phrases
The starting and ending points do not have to be single words. You can bracket longer, more complex noun phrases with these prepositions to define the boundaries of your range.
| From the first production line to the third line, all the workers are on their feet. | از خط تولید اول تا خط سوم، همهی کارگران سرپا هستند.az khat towlid avval tâ khat sevom, hame-ye kârgarân sarpâ hastand. |
| In traffic, it takes two hours from Tehran to Karaj. | در ترافیک، از تهران تا کرج دو ساعت طول میکشد.dar terâfik, az tehrân tâ karaj do sâ'at tul mikeshad. |
