In Farsi, the standard present continuous tense (like میروم, meaning "I go" or "I am going") covers both habitual and ongoing actions. To emphasize that an action is happening right at this exact moment, use the present forms of the auxiliary verb داشتن (to have) to create the present progressive.
The structure requires two conjugated verbs: [Conjugated داشتن] + [Rest of sentence] + [Conjugated present continuous verb]
| Subject | Auxiliary |
|---|---|
| من | دارم |
| تو | داری |
| او / آن | دارد |
| ما | داریم |
| شما | دارید |
| آنها / ایشان | دارند |
The auxiliary verb typically follows the subject, framing the sentence with the main verb at the very end.
| The presenter is returning to the studio right now. | مجری الان دارد به استودیو برمیگردد.mojri al'ân dârad be estudio bar-mi-gardad. |
| This channel is broadcasting the event live. | این کانال دارد رویداد را زنده پخش میکند.in kânâl dârad ruydâd râ zende pakhsh mikonad. |
Compound Verbs
Both the auxiliary and the main verb must match the subject in person and number. For compound verbs, the main action verb at the end takes the می prefix and the conjugation ending, exactly as it does in the regular present tense.
| We are establishing a connection with the studio. | ما داریم با استودیو ارتباط برقرار میکنیم.mâ dârim bâ estudio ertebât barqarâr mikonim |
| They are establishing a connection, but the satellite is broken. | آنها دارند ارتباط برقرار میکنند، اما ماهواره خراب است.ânhâ dârand ertebât barqarâr mikonand, ammâ mâhvâre kharâb ast. |
Questions
To ask a question in the present progressive, keep the exact same structure and add a question word like آیا (for yes/no questions) or چرا (why) to the beginning.
| Is the presenter reading the news? | آیا مجری دارد اخبار را میخواند؟âyâ mojri dârad akhbâr râ mikhânad? |
| Why is the presenter speaking without a microphone? | چرا مجری دارد بدون میکروفون صحبت میکند؟cherâ mojri dârad bedun-e mikrofon sohbat mikonad? |
