To express a past obligation or regret (what should have happened), Farsi uses the invariant modal باید with the Past Continuous tense.
باید + Past Continuous verb
Because باید is invariant, it never changes. Only the main verb conjugates to match the subject.
| We should have coordinated the date of the flight. | ما باید تاریخ پرواز را هماهنگ میکردیم.mâ bâyad târikh parvâz râ hamâhang mikardim. |
| The organizer should have refunded the money. | برگزارکننده باید پول را پس میداد.bargozârkonande bâyad pul râ pas midâd. |
Notice how باید stays exactly the same, while the final verbs (میکردیم and میداد) change to reflect who should have taken action.
This pattern is especially useful when dealing with cancellations, refunds, or customer service mishaps:
| The customer should have gotten the deposit back. | مشتری باید پیشپرداخت را پس میگرفت.moshtari bâyad pish-parâkht râ pas migereft. |
| You should have complained about the invoice. | شما باید دربارهی فاکتور شکایت میکردید.shomâ bâyad darbâre-ye fâktor shekâyat mikardid |
| They should have apologized to the disappointed guests. | آنها باید از مهمانهای ناامید عذرخواهی میکردند.ânhâ bâyad az mehmân-hâ-ye nâomid ozrkhâhi mikardand. |
| The organizer should have changed the date on the invoice. | برگزارکننده باید تاریخ را روی فاکتور تغییر میداد.bargozâr-konande bâyad târikh râ ruye fâktur taghyir midâd. |
