Negative future tense (nakhâham)

To state that an action will not happen, Farsi uses the negative form of the future tense. Just as in the affirmative future tense, we use the helper verb خواستن alongside the short infinitive of your main action.

Negating the Future Tense

To make a future sentence negative, you simply negate the auxiliary verb. Add the negative prefix نـ to the conjugated forms of خواستن.

Here are the negative auxiliary forms used to build the negative future tense:

PersonNegative AuxiliaryMeaning
1st SingularنخواهمI will not
2nd SingularنخواهیYou (sg.) will not
3rd SingularنخواهدHe/She/It will not
1st PluralنخواهیمWe will not
2nd PluralنخواهیدYou (pl.) will not
3rd PluralنخواهندThey will not

Using with Compound Verbs

When discussing environmental conservation, you will use many compound verbs, such as آلوده کردن (to pollute) or نابود کردن (to destroy).

Remember that in the future tense, the auxiliary verb splits the compound. Place the negative conjugated form of خواستن exactly after the non-verbal part (the noun or adjective) and before the short infinitive of the verbal part.

Here is how this formula looks in practice:

Notice how the main verb remains as a short infinitive (like کرد) while the negated helper verb (like نخواهیم) carries the tense and person.
