Preparing the Kitchen
Let's look at a few common words for managing food quantities and ingredients when catering an event.
| The head chef needs this amount of ingredients for the catering. | سرآشپز برای پذیرایی به این مقدار مواد نیاز دارد.sarâshpaz barâye pazirâyi be in meqdâr mavâd niâz dârad. |
Multipliers with برابر
To express that an amount is scaled up by a factor, Farsi uses the word برابر after a number, similar to the English suffix "-fold" or the phrase "times as much" (e.g., دو برابر means "double" or "twice as much").
Combine this with the verb کردن (to do / to make) to form compound verbs like دو برابر کردن (to double) or ده برابر کردن (to increase tenfold).
| He increases the amount of ingredients tenfold. | او مقدار مواد را ده برابر میکند.u meqdâr mavâd râ dah barâbar mikonad. |
| If you double the ingredients, you must use a large pot. | اگر مواد را دو برابر کنی، باید از قابلمهی بزرگ استفاده کنی.agar mavâd râ do barâbar koni, bâyad az qâbolme-ye bozorg estefâde koni. |
| I myself triple the ingredients. | من خودم موادو سه برابر میکنم.man khodam mavâdo se barâbar mikonam. |
You can also use these multipliers with the verb "to be" to describe static quantities.
| The pot is very heavy because the amount of meat is four times as much. | قابلمه خیلی سنگین است، چون مقدار گوشت چهار برابر است.ghâbolmeh kheyli sangin ast, chon meghdâr gusht chahâr barâbar ast. |
Taste and Consistency
Liquids and sauces are often described as either رقیق (thin) or غلیظ (thick or strong).
| If you add water, the food becomes very thin. | اگر آب اضافه کنی، غذا خیلی رقیق میشود.agar âb ezâfe koni, ghazâ kheyli raghigh mishavad. |
| For this catering, the coffee must be very thick. | برای این پذیرایی، قهوه باید خیلی غلیظ باشد.barâye in pazirâyi, qahve bâyad kheyli ghaliz bâshad. |
To keep these textures consistent, use the compound verb هم زدن (to stir).
| Before the party, you must stir all the thick ingredients well. | قبل از مهمانی، باید همهی مواد غلیظ را خوب هم بزنید.ghabl az mehmâni, bâyad hame-ye mavâd-e ghaliz râ khub ham bezanid. |
