In emergency medical situations, timing is everything. To express that an action must happen immediately after or upon a specific event, Farsi uses a specific temporal phrase:
| upon / immediately after | به محضbe mahz-e |
Using Infinitives
To describe an immediate succession of events, connect به محض to a full infinitive using the Ezafe. This structure translates cleanly to "Upon doing [action]" or "Immediately after doing [action]".
| Upon losing consciousness, call the ambulance. | به محض از دست دادن هوشیاری، با آمبولانس تماس بگیرید.be mahze az dast dâdane hushyâri, bâ âmbulâns tamâs begirid |
If the infinitive has a subject or object, it links to it with another Ezafe, creating a chain.
| Upon the patient's arrival, check his pulse and breathing. | به محض رسیدن بیمار، نبض و تنفس او را بررسی کنید.be mahz-e residan-e bimâr, nabz o tanaffos-e u râ barresi konid. |
Using Abstract Nouns
Just like with formal conditionals, به محض is frequently paired with abstract action nouns instead of infinitives. This is especially common with medical and technical vocabulary, such as تثبیت (stabilization) or تزریق (injection).
| Upon the stabilization of the condition, we dispatch the patient to the hospital. | به محض تثبیت وضعیت، بیمار را به بیمارستان اعزام میکنیم.be mahze tasbite vaz'iyat, bimâr râ be bimârestân e'zâm mikonim. |
The main clause then continues normally to describe the outcome, procedure, or command that immediately follows.
| Upon the injection of the medicine, the pain decreases. | به محض تزریق دارو، درد کاهش مییابد.be mahze tazrighe dâroo, dard kâhesh miyâbad. |
