In business, economics, and daily life, you will often need to talk about parts of a whole. Let's look at how to express percentages and common fractions in Farsi.
Expressing Percentages
The Farsi word for "percent" is درصد. To express a percentage, simply place the number directly before the word درصد:
- ده درصد (ten percent)
- سی درصد (thirty percent)
- پنجاه درصد (fifty percent)
Here are some examples of percentages used in business and everyday contexts, such as talking about taxes, discounts, and profits:
| The company's profit grows ten percent every year. | سود شرکت هر سال ده درصد رشد میکند.sud sherkat har sâl dah darsad roshd mikonad. |
| This book has a thirty percent discount. | این کتاب سی درصد تخفیف دارد.in ketâb si darsad takhfif dârad. |
| Your salary is ten percent more. | حقوق شما ده درصد بیشتر است.hoghugh-e shomâ dah darsad bishtar ast. |
You can also use it as a standalone noun to talk about the "percentage" or rate of something:
| This country's tax percentage is very high. | درصد مالیات این کشور خیلی زیاد است.darsad-e mâliyât-e in keshvar kheyli ziyâd ast. |
Fractions: Half and Quarter
While mathematical fractions have their own specific phrasing, the two most common everyday fractions have dedicated words that act just like numbers:
- نیم (half)
- ربع (quarter)
These words sit directly before the noun they quantify. If you want to say "a quarter" (like a quarter of an hour), you will often use یک ربع.
| He bought half a kilo of apples. | او نیم کیلو سیب خرید.u nim kilo sib kharid. |
| He will get his salary in half an hour. | او نیم ساعت دیگر حقوق میگیرد.u nim sâ'at digar hoquq migirad. |
| I want to rest for a quarter of an hour. | من میخواهم یک ربع استراحت کنم.man mikhâham yek rob' esterâhat konam. |
| I paid a quarter of the trip's cost. | من ربع هزینهی سفر را پرداخت کردم.man rob'-e hazine-ye safar râ pardâkht kardam. |
