Formal Animate Demonstratives
In everyday Farsi, you can use اینها (these) and آنها (those) to refer to both people and things. However, in formal, literary, or official contexts—such as diplomatic events or news reports—Farsi uses a special set of demonstrative pronouns exclusively for people.
By attaching the formal animate plural suffix ـان to the base demonstrative words این (this) and آن (that), you create elegant pronouns perfectly suited for high-level delegations.
To formally say "these people," use اینان.
| These are senior diplomats who have just arrived from Europe. | اینان دیپلماتهای ارشدی هستند که تازه از اروپا رسیدهاند.eenân diplomât-hâye arshadi hastand ke tâze az orupâ raside'and. |
| These are senior diplomats of the ministry. | اینان دیپلماتهای ارشد وزارت هستند.inân diplomât-hâye arshad-e vezârat hastand. |
To refer to "those people" in an official context, use آنان.
| The minister welcomes those people today. | امروز وزیر از آنان استقبال میکند.emrooz vazir az ânân esteqbâl mikonad. |
| Those people are very happy about being invited to the embassy. | آنان از دعوت شدن به سفارت خیلی خوشحال هستند.ânân az da'vat shodan be sefârat kheyli khoshhâl hastand. |
Because اینان and آنان are pronouns, they function exactly like standard nouns. They can take prepositions, act as the subject of a sentence, or be marked as direct objects using را.
| The ministry has planned the protocol for these people. | وزارت تشریفات را برای اینان برنامهریزی کرده است.vezârat tashrifât râ barâye inân barnâme-rizi karde ast. |
| We invite those people to the international conference. | ما آنان را به همایش بینالمللی دعوت میکنیم.mâ ânân râ be hamâyesh beynolmelali da'vat mikonim. |
| His ambassador welcomed these people at the airport. | سفیرش در فرودگاه از اینان استقبال کرد.safirash dar forudgâh az inân esteqbâl kard. |
