On the Verge
To express that something is just about to happen, Persian uses در شرف (on the verge of) or در آستانه (on the threshold of). Link these phrases to a noun using the Ezafe. The sentence typically ends with the "to be" copula.
Because آستانه ends in a silent heh (ه), its Ezafe takes the form of a ye (ی).
| The world is on the verge of a scientific revolution. | جهان در شرف یک انقلاب علمی است.jahân dar sharaf-e yek enghelâb-e elmi ast. |
| That empire was on the verge of collapse. | آن امپراتوری در شرف فروپاشی بود.ân emperâturi dar sharaf-e forupâshi bud. |
| Humanity is on the threshold of a massive transformation. | بشر در آستانهی یک تحول عظیم است.bashar dar âstâne-ye yek tahavvol-e azim ast. |
Using Infinitives
You can also use these expressions with actions. Attach a full infinitive (a verb ending in ـدن or ـتن) directly after the Ezafe.
| We are on the threshold of making a new medicine. | ما در آستانهی ساختن یک داروی جدید هستیم.mâ dar âstâne-ye sâkhtan yek dâruye jadid hastim. |
When using a compound verb, the entire compound infinitive simply follows the expression of imminence.
| They are on the verge of signing this agreement. | آنها در شرف امضا کردن این توافقنامه هستند.ânhâ dar sharaf-e emzâ kardan-e in tavâfoq-nâme hastand. |
| Scientists are on the threshold of starting a new era. | دانشمندان در آستانهی شروع کردن یک دوران جدید هستند.dâneshmandân dar âstâne-ye shoru' kardan-e yek dowrân-e jadid hastand |
