To express purpose—saying "in order to" or "so that"—Farsi uses the conjunctions برای اینکه and تا.
Because a purpose is a goal or intention, the verb expressing that goal takes the present subjunctive.
Using برای اینکه
The phrase برای اینکه translates to "in order to" or "so that".
| I go on a diet in order to lose weight. | رژیم میگیرم برای اینکه وزن کم کنم.rezhim migiram barâye inke vazn kam konam. |
| The coach gives me a schedule in order to build muscle. | مربی به من برنامه میدهد برای اینکه عضله بسازم.morabbi be man barnâme midahad barâye inke azole besâzam. |
Notice how the main action uses the present indicative, but the verb following برای اینکه switches to the subjunctive mood.
Using تا
A shorter, very common alternative is تا. While تا can also mean "until," when paired with the present subjunctive it means "so that" or "in order to".
| I eat vegetables every day so that I am healthy. | هر روز سبزیجات میخورم تا سالم باشم.har rooz sabzijât mikhoram tâ sâlem bâsham. |
| We go to the gym so that we burn calories. | ما به باشگاه میرویم تا کالری بسوزانیم.mâ be bâshgâh miravim tâ kâlori besuzânim. |
Whether the subject stays the same or someone else is involved, the structure is identical: main action + conjunction + subjunctive goal.
| The coach exercises with me so that I become strong. | مربی با من ورزش میکند تا قوی بشوم.morabbi bâ man varzesh mikonad tâ qavi beshavam. |
| I do not eat sweets so that I lose weight. | شیرینی نمیخورم تا وزن کم کنم.shirini nemikhoram tâ vazn kam konam. |
