Expressing Purpose
To explain the goal behind an action (meaning "in order to"), Farsi uses the preposition برای (for) followed by the infinitive form of the verb.
The standard infinitive always ends with the letter ن, like in "to escape":
| to escape | فرار کردنfarâr kardan |
To explain why an action is performed, place برای right before this infinitive. This purpose phrase can appear at the beginning of a sentence or in the middle.
| The magician uses a wand to make the rabbit appear. | شعبدهباز برای ظاهر کردن خرگوش از عصا استفاده میکند.sho'bade-bâz barâye zâher kardan-e khargush az asâ estefâde mikonad. |
| To escape, the magician must open the handcuffs and the lock. | برای فرار کردن، شعبدهباز باید دستبند و قفل را باز کند.barâye farâr kardan, sho'bade-bâz bâyad dastband va qofl râ bâz konad. |
| The magician put the key in his sleeve to escape. | شعبدهباز برای فرار کردن، کلید را در آستین خود گذاشت.sho'bade-bâz barâye farâr kardan, kelid râ dar âstin khod gozâsht. |
This structure works across all tenses and commands.
| To deceive the audience, hide the card in your sleeve! | برای گول زدن تماشاگر، کارت را در آستین خود پنهان کن!barâye gol zadan tamâshâgar, kârt râ dar âstin khod penhân kon! |
| To make the dove disappear, look carefully at the box! | برای غیب کردن کبوتر، به جعبه خوب نگاه کن!barâye gheybe kardan-e kabutar, be ja'be-ye khub negâh kon! |
