When managing the daily operations of public transport networks, you often need to clarify exactly who or what is responsible for an action—such as distinguishing the station manager from the operator, or the machine itself from the overall system. In English, we use words like "himself," "itself," or "the very" to emphasize identity.
Emphasizing Identity with خود
In Farsi, you can emphasize a noun's specific identity by placing خود right before it, linking the two words together with the unseen ezafe vowel.
While خود often functions as a reflexive pronoun, placing it before a noun modifies it to mean "the [noun] itself."
| The railway manager himself checked the electronic gates. | خود مدیر راهآهن گیتهای الکترونیکی را بررسی کرد.khod modir râh-âhan git-hâ-ye elektroniki râ barresi kard. |
| Did the breakdown of the machine itself cause an increase in the headway? | آیا خرابی خود دستگاه باعث افزایش سرفاصله شد؟âyâ kharâbi khod dastgâh bâ'es afzâyesh sarfâsele shod? |
This emphatic modifier works exactly the same whether you are talking about people, physical objects, or even abstract administrative concepts like timing intervals and headways.
| The operator told me that the headway itself has not changed. | متصدی به من گفت که خود سرفاصله تغییر نکرده است.motesaddi be man goft ke khod sarfâsele taghyir nakarde ast. |
| Movement in the railway station itself is done with an electronic ticket. | تردد در خود ایستگاه راهآهن با بلیت الکترونیکی انجام میشود.taraddod dar khod istgâh râh-âhan bâ belit elektroniki anjâm mishavad. |
You can also use this modifier alongside demonstratives like "this" or "that". In these cases, خود links directly to the demonstrative word via the ezafe.
| The duty of this operator himself is moving passengers on the nationwide line. | وظیفهی خود این راهبر، جابهجایی مسافران در خط سراسری است.vazife-ye khod-e in râhbar, jâbejâyi mosâferân dar khat-e sarâsari ast. |
