Expressing Degree and Result
To describe extreme situations that cause a specific result—like saying something is "so big that..." or "so far that..."—Farsi uses the correlative structure آنقدر ... که ....
Place آنقدر ("so" or "to such a degree") before the adjective or adverb you are emphasizing. Then, use که (that) to introduce the result. Because the result is a factual consequence, the verb in the که clause takes the indicative mood (standard present or past, not subjunctive).
Here is how it is used to describe vast distances and sizes in space:
| The distance to the space base is so great that this journey takes a long time. | فاصله تا پایگاه فضایی آنقدر زیاد است که این سفر طول میکشد.fâsele tâ pâygâh-e fazâyi ânqadr ziyâd ast ke in safar tul mikeshad. |
| Our galaxy is so big that it seems infinite. | کهکشان ما آنقدر بزرگ است که بینهایت به نظر میرسد.kahkeshân mâ ânqadr bozorg ast ke bi-nahâyat be nazar miresad. |
Expanding on Extreme Situations
You can use this pattern for any extreme quality, such as the intense pull of a black hole (سیاهچاله) or the brightness of a star:
| The gravity of the black hole is so strong that even light cannot escape. | جاذبهی سیاهچاله آنقدر قوی است که نور هم نمیتواند فرار کند.jâzebe-ye siyâh-châle ânqadr qavi ast ke nur ham nemitavânad farâr konad. |
| This star is so bright that we see it without a telescope. | این ستاره آنقدر درخشان است که آن را بدون تلسکوپ میبینیم.in setâre ânqadr derakhshân ast ke ân râ bedun-e teleskop mibinim. |
Degree and Result in the Past Tense
For past events, the structure remains exactly the same. The verb in the result clause simply takes the past tense:
| The space mission was so dangerous that nobody accepted it. | ماموریت فضایی آنقدر خطرناک بود که هیچکس آن را قبول نکرد.mâmuriyat fazâyi ânqadr khatarnâk bud ke hichkas ân râ ghabul nakard. |
