Conditional provision (dar surati ke)

Adopting a Pet

When adopting animals from a shelter (پناهگاه), there are usually strict rules and requirements to ensure their welfare (رفاه).

Conditional Provision: "Provided that"

To state a requirement or a condition for an action, Farsi uses the conjunction در صورتی که. Literally translating to "in the case that," it is used to mean "provided that" or "in case."

Because this phrase sets up a hypothetical condition or requirement, the verb inside the در صورتی که clause must always be in the subjunctive mood.

Like many conditional phrases, you can place the در صورتی که clause at the beginning of the sentence to establish the condition right away. The main clause then follows with an indicative, future, or imperative verb.

Discussing Requirements

When speaking with a shelter manager or veterinarian, you will frequently hear this structure used to discuss the commitment (تعهد) and qualifications (صلاحیت) needed for guardianship (سرپرستی).

Notice that the verb inside the condition clause remains subjunctive, whether it describes an action a veterinarian needs to take, or a qualification an adopting family must have.
