Compound Action Nouns
In Farsi, you can create abstract nouns to describe continuous, reciprocal, or repetitive activities by combining two verb stems with the conjunction و (meaning "and," but pronounced "o" in this structure).
Pairing the past stems for "to go" (رفت) and "to come" (آمد) gives you the compound noun for "coming and going" (رفتوآمد). You will also commonly see this used for "conversation" (گفتوگو).
| Although the street is quiet, the coming and going here is a lot. | با اینکه خیابان خلوت است، رفتوآمد اینجا زیاد است.bâ inke khiyâbân khalvat ast, raft-o-âmad injâ ziyâd ast. |
| Their conversation took a long time. | گفتوگوی آنها خیلی طول کشید.goft-o-guye ânhâ kheyli tul keshid. |
Trade, Clashes, and Social Calls
This pattern is used for actions involving two parties or opposing directions. Combining "giving" and "taking" forms trade or commerce (دادوستد), while "hitting" and "colliding" creates a brawl (زدوخورد).
| Trade is difficult in this market. | دادوستد در این بازار سخت است.dâd-o-setad dar in bâzâr sakht ast. |
| The police finished the brawl quickly. | پلیس زدوخورد را سریع تمام کرد.polis zad-o-khord râ sari' tamâm kard. |
The same logic applies to social events. Link "seeing" and "visiting" for social calls (دیدوبازدید), or "sitting" and "rising" for socializing (نشستوبرخاست).
| Visiting families is very interesting. | دیدوبازدید خانوادهها خیلی جالب است.did-o-bâzdid khânevâde-hâ kheyli jâleb ast. |
| Associating with these people is dangerous. | نشستوبرخاست با این اشخاص خطرناک است.neshast-o-barkhâst bâ in ashkhâs khatarnâk ast. |
Repetitive Daily Chores
This structure also describes continuous chores and daily efforts. Some compounds pair a past stem with a present stem to emphasize an ongoing process—such as searching (جستوجو), washing (شستوشو), or cooking (پختوپز).
| We found the lost child after a lot of search. | ما بچه گمشده را بعد از جستوجوی زیاد پیدا کردیم.mâ bache-ye gomshode râ ba'd az jostojuye ziyâd peydâ kardim. |
| Washing the carpets took a long time. | شستوشوی فرشها خیلی طول کشید.shostoshuye farshhâ kheyli tul keshid. |
| My wife is standing in the kitchen for cooking. | همسرم برای پختوپز در آشپزخانه ایستاده است.hamsaram barâye pokht-o-paz dar âshpazkhâne istâde ast. |
Opposites
Pairing direct opposites creates a compound covering the entire spectrum of an activity, such as construction (ساختوساز), winning and losing (برد و باخت), or buying and selling (خرید و فروش).
(Note on spelling: These compounds can be written with zero-width spaces, like *خریدوفروش, or as separate words, like خرید و فروش. Both are correct and widely used.)*
| There is a lot of construction in this neighborhood. | ساختوساز در این محله خیلی زیاد است.sâkht-o-sâz dar in mahalle kheyli ziâd ast. |
| In every match, there is winning and losing. | در هر مسابقه، برد و باخت وجود دارد.dar har mosâbeqe, bord o bâkht vojud dârad. |
| I hope that buying and selling in the market increases. | امیدوارم که خرید و فروش در بازار افزایش پیدا کند.omidvâram ke kharid o forush dar bâzâr afzâyesh peydâ konad. |
