Compound action nouns (raft o âmad)

Compound Action Nouns

In Farsi, you can create abstract nouns to describe continuous, reciprocal, or repetitive activities by combining two verb stems with the conjunction و (meaning "and," but pronounced "o" in this structure).

Pairing the past stems for "to go" (رفت) and "to come" (آمد) gives you the compound noun for "coming and going" (رفت‌وآمد). You will also commonly see this used for "conversation" (گفت‌وگو).

Trade, Clashes, and Social Calls

This pattern is used for actions involving two parties or opposing directions. Combining "giving" and "taking" forms trade or commerce (دادوستد), while "hitting" and "colliding" creates a brawl (زدوخورد).

The same logic applies to social events. Link "seeing" and "visiting" for social calls (دیدوبازدید), or "sitting" and "rising" for socializing (نشست‌وبرخاست).

Repetitive Daily Chores

This structure also describes continuous chores and daily efforts. Some compounds pair a past stem with a present stem to emphasize an ongoing process—such as searching (جست‌وجو), washing (شست‌وشو), or cooking (پخت‌وپز).

Opposites

Pairing direct opposites creates a compound covering the entire spectrum of an activity, such as construction (ساخت‌وساز), winning and losing (برد و باخت), or buying and selling (خرید و فروش).

(Note on spelling: These compounds can be written with zero-width spaces, like *خریدوفروش, or as separate words, like خرید و فروش. Both are correct and widely used.)*
