Comparative Adjectives (ـتر)
In Farsi, making an adjective comparative (like adding "-er" or "more" in English) is simple and regular. Just add the suffix ـتر to the end of the adjective.
| Adjective | Comparative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| گران | گرانتر | more expensive |
| سخت | سختتر | harder |
| آسان | آسانتر | easier |
| نزدیک | نزدیکتر | closer |
Comparing Two Things (از)
To say "than" when comparing two items, use the preposition از. The structure of a comparative sentence is straightforward:
[Item 1] + از + [Item 2] + [Comparative Adjective] + [Verb]
| This car is more expensive than that bicycle. | این ماشین از آن دوچرخه گرانتر است.in mâshin az ân docharkhe gerântar ast |
| The dog is stronger than the cat. | سگ از گربه قویتر است.sag az gorbe qavitar ast. |
| Persian is easier than English. | فارسی از انگلیسی آسانتر است.fârsi az engelisi âsântar ast. |
This pattern remains the same regardless of the verb's tense:
| The math exam was harder than the project. | امتحان ریاضی از پروژه سختتر بود.emtehân-e riyâzi az porozhe sakht-tar bud. |
Implied Comparisons
If the context is clear, you can use the comparative adjective and drop از and the second item entirely.
| The laptop is more expensive than the phone, but the pen is cheaper. | لپتاپ از گوشی گرانتر است اما خودکار ارزانتر است.lap-tâp az gooshi gerân-tar ast ammâ khodkâr arzân-tar ast. |
| My house is further than the bank, but the park is closer. | خانهی من از بانک دورتر است اما پارک نزدیکتر است.khâne-ye man az bânk durtar ast ammâ pârk nazdiktar ast. |
