Estimating with حدود
To say "about" or "approximately" with numbers, use حدود. Because it acts as a noun meaning "bounds", it requires the invisible ezafe vowel to link it to the number that follows.
| I estimate the number of spectators at about two thousand people. | تعداد تماشاگران را حدود دو هزار نفر تخمین میزنم.te'dâd-e tamâshâgarân râ hodud do hezâr nafar takhmin mizanam |
| We estimate the capacity of this seating area at about fifty people. | ظرفیت این جایگاه را حدود پنجاه نفر تخمین میزنیم.zarfiyat in jâygâh râ hodud panjâh nafar takhmin mizanim. |
Estimating with تقریباً
Another common word for "approximately", "nearly", or "almost" is تقریباً. As an adverb, it does not require an ezafe. Place it directly before the number.
| The capacity of the hall is approximately one thousand people. | ظرفیت سالن تقریباً هزار نفر است.zarfiyat sâlon taqriban hezâr nafar ast. |
| Approximately one hundred tickets were sold yesterday. | دیروز تقریباً صد بلیت فروش رفت.dirooz taghriban sad belit foroush raft. |
Venue Vocabulary in Context
You will frequently use these approximations when discussing a seating area (جایگاه), rows (ردیف), or remaining (باقی) capacity.
| About ten empty rows are remaining. | حدود ده ردیف خالی باقی است.hodud dah radif khâli bâqi ast. |
| Almost ten rows filled up. | تقریباً ده ردیف پر شد.taqriban dah radif por shod. |
