Adverbs of manner (-âne)

Forming Adverbs of Manner (-انه)

In Farsi, you can easily turn a noun describing a type of person into an adverb of manner—describing how an action is done—by attaching the suffix انه. This functions very much like adding "-ly" to an adjective in English.

For example, take the word for a fool: ابله. By adding انه, you create the adverb ابلهانه (foolishly). Let's see this play out on the chessboard.

Clever and Cowardly Moves

This simple suffix lets you vividly describe the strategies and attitudes of the players. A shrewd person (زیرک) acts cleverly (زیرکانه), while a coward (بزدل) behaves cowardly (بزدلانه).

Masters and Amateurs

You can also use this pattern to talk about a player's skill level. An amateur (ناشی) plays clumsily (ناشیانه). Conversely, someone playing with the skill of a master executes their moves masterfully (استادانه).

The Conqueror

When the tense match is finally over, the conqueror (فاتح) can celebrate their victory triumphantly (فاتحانه).

Keep in mind that words ending in انه can sometimes act as descriptive adjectives as well as adverbs, just like the English word "cowardly" can describe a person's behavior, a strategy, or a mistake.
