Expressing "No Longer" or "Not Anymore"
To express that a situation is "no longer" happening or "not anymore," Farsi pairs the word دیگر with a negative verb.
| This city is abandoned and is no longer prosperous. | این شهر متروکه است و دیگر رونق ندارد.in shahr matrooke ast va digar ronaq nadârad. |
| This village was thriving in the past, but it is no longer thriving. | این روستا در گذشته آباد بود، اما دیگر آباد نیست.in rustâ dar gozashte âbâd bud, ammâ digar âbâd nist. |
Unlike English, which often uses "no longer" with a positive verb, Farsi strictly requires a negative verb.
| In the past, the residents used to work here, but they no longer work. | در گذشته ساکنان اینجا کار میکردند، اما دیگر کار نمیکنند.dar gozashte sâkenân injâ kâr mikardand, ammâ digar kâr nemikonand. |
| Tourists no longer drink water from this well. | گردشگران دیگر از این چاه آب نمینوشند.gardeshgarân digar az in châh âb nemi-nushand. |
Position in the Sentence
دیگر is flexible but usually sits right before the object or the verb phrase it modifies.
| The well is empty and we no longer have water. | چاه خالی است و ما دیگر آب نداریم.châh khâli ast va mâ digar âb nadârim. |
Combining with Other Words
You can combine دیگر with words like چیزی (anything) to mean "nothing ... anymore."
| Nothing remains in this city anymore. | دیگر چیزی در این شهر باقی نمانده است.digar chizi dar in shahr bâqi namânde ast. |
| This alley no longer has residents, so it doesn't have any bustle either. | این کوچه دیگر ساکن ندارد، پس شلوغی هم ندارد.in kuche digar sâken nadârad, pas sholughi ham nadârad. |
