How would I apply this lesson's grammar to say "The explanation in the essay is expected to be academic"?
You would use the structure geacht worden te + infinitive. Because the subject is singular (de uitleg), you use wordt geacht. The main verb is zijn (to be), which goes at the end. The sentence becomes: De uitleg in het essay wordt geacht academisch te zijn.
The word uitleg looks like it comes from a verb. How does that work?
Uitleg derives from the separable verb uitleggen (to explain). In Dutch, it's common to form nouns directly from verb stems. Since uit means "out" and leggen means "to lay", uitleg is literally the "laying out" of information—an explanation.
I always struggle with the gender of loanwords. Is there a rule for why it is het essay?
Unfortunately, there is no strict rule. While many English and French loanwords in Dutch default to the de article, essay is one of the common exceptions that takes het. It is best to just memorize it as a het-word.
