Questions & Answers about De verhuurder repareert de lift.
How is the word verhuurder formed, and why does it use the suffix -der instead of just -er?
Verhuurder comes from the verb verhuren (to rent out). The stem of this verb is verhuur. In Dutch, when a verb stem ends in the letter -r, we typically add -der instead of -er to form the agent noun (the person doing the action). This prevents an awkward double 'r' sound and makes the word easier to pronounce.
What is the exact difference between a verhuurder and a huurder?
The prefix ver- often changes a verb to indicate a transfer or an opposite direction. While huren means "to rent" (as a tenant paying for something), verhuren means "to rent out" (as the owner). Therefore, a huurder is the tenant, and a verhuurder is the landlord or lessor.
Could I use the word huisbaas instead of verhuurder here?
Yes, you could, but there is a slight nuance in meaning. Huisbaas specifically refers to a residential landlord (literally "house boss"). Verhuurder is a broader, slightly more formal term that applies to anyone who rents anything out, whether it's an apartment, a commercial office building, or even a rental car. Since this sentence is about a building with a lift, either word works.
Is lift an English loanword, and how do you make it plural?
