Questions & Answers about Wij rekenen met de statistiek.
Why use met here instead of op?
Rekenen met means "to calculate with" or "to include as a factor in a calculation." If you wanted to say "we count on" or "rely on" the statistics, you would use the preposition op (Wij rekenen op de statistiek).
Does de statistiek refer to the actual data numbers or the mathematical field?
Because it is singular, de statistiek refers to the mathematical field of statistics, the science itself, or a single statistical model. If you want to talk about the actual data points or numbers, you need to use the plural form de statistieken.
Why is there a de before statistiek when English normally just says "statistics" without "the"?
Dutch frequently uses definite articles for abstract concepts and fields of study where English omits them. You will see this with other sciences and subjects too, such as de wiskunde (mathematics) and de natuurkunde (physics).
Where does the stress fall when pronouncing statistiek?
The stress falls on the final syllable: sta-tis-TIEK. This is a highly predictable pattern in Dutch for loanwords ending in -iek, such as muziek (music), fabriek (factory), and techniek (technique).
