Questions & Answers about Ik luister graag naar de muziek.
How do we get luister from the infinitive luisteren?
To get the ik (I) form of a regular verb, you take the infinitive (luisteren) and drop the -en at the end. That leaves the stem: luister. For plural pronouns like wij (we) or zij (they), you would use the full infinitive: wij luisteren.
Why is there no verb for "like" in this sentence?
In Dutch, instead of using a verb for "to like", you often use the main verb plus the word graag (which means "gladly" or "willingly"). So, Ik luister graag literally means "I listen gladly", which is how Dutch speakers say "I like listening" or "I like to listen".
Why do we use the word naar here?
Just like in English where you "listen to" something, in Dutch you use the fixed combination luisteren naar. The word naar translates to "to" in this context. It is a good idea to memorize luisteren naar together!
Why does graag come before naar de muziek?
In a standard Dutch sentence, adverbs like graag generally come immediately after the conjugated verb (here, luister). That pushes the rest of the information, like the prepositional phrase naar de muziek, toward the end of the sentence.
