Questions & Answers about Of de sauna heet was!
Why does this exclamation start with of? Doesn't that usually mean 'or' or 'whether'?
It does! In this context, starting with of creates a rhetorical exclamation for emphatic affirmation. It is as if you are playfully responding to an unasked question: 'You are asking whether the sauna was hot? Oh, it certainly was!' It translates perfectly to the English structure 'Was the sauna ever hot!'
Why is the verb was placed at the very end of the sentence instead of at the beginning like a normal question or exclamation?
Because the sentence starts with the subordinating conjunction of, it triggers subordinate clause word order. In Dutch, subordinate clauses push the conjugated verb to the end of the sentence. Even though it is a standalone exclamation here, it grammatically behaves like an indirect question.
Could I just say De sauna was heel heet! to express the same thing?
You could, but it changes the tone. De sauna was heel heet! is simply a factual statement meaning 'The sauna was very hot.' Using this Of... structure adds a strong conversational and emotional flair, showing enthusiasm, shock, or exhaustion.
Is this structure only used for past events with was, or can I use it for the present tense too?
You can use it in any tense to emphasize an extreme state! If someone asks if you are tired right now, you can absolutely reply with Of ik moe ben! (Am I ever tired!). The rule stays exactly the same: start with of and push the verb to the end.
