Question 1

How does the suffix -loos function in geluidloos here?

Accepted Answer

The suffix -loos means 'without' and works exactly like the English suffix '-less'. Attached to the noun geluid (sound), it creates the adjective geluidloos (soundless). Notice that Dutch uses adjectives as adverbs without changing their form, so here it modifies the verb to mean 'without a sound'.

Question 2

Why does the verb uitvallen mean 'stops' in this context?

Accepted Answer

While uitvallen can literally mean 'to fall out' (like hair), it is the standard verb used when machinery, engines, or utilities (like power or internet) suddenly stop working or fail. Here, valt... uit simply means the engine cuts out.

Question 3

Why is the separable prefix uit placed before the prepositional phrase in de nacht?

Accepted Answer

Normally, separable prefixes are pushed to the very end of the clause. However, Dutch grammar allows prepositional phrases of time or place (like in de nacht) to break this rule and appear after the final verb part. Placing it at the end makes the sentence flow more naturally and feel less top-heavy.

Question 4

What is the difference between saying an engine stops geluidloos versus using the word stil?

Accepted Answer

While both relate to a lack of noise, geluidloos (soundless) is absolute, meaning it produces zero sound whatsoever. Stil translates more loosely to 'quiet'. Furthermore, stilvallen is its own specific verb meaning 'to come to a halt', whereas the phrase valt geluidloos uit specifically emphasizes the eerie lack of noise when the engine dies.
