Questions & Answers about Kijk vooruit naar de horizon.
Why is it vooruit and not just voor?
Voor is usually a preposition meaning "in front of," which expects an object (like "in front of the car"). By adding the suffix -uit, we create the directional spatial adverb vooruit, meaning "forward" or "straight ahead." This shows the direction of your gaze, fitting perfectly with the other directional adverbs in this lesson.
Why does the sentence use naar when the English translation says "at"?
When you direct your eyes toward something in Dutch, the fixed verb-preposition combination is kijken naar (literally "to look towards"). English uses "look at," but translating "at" literally to op or aan wouldn't work for this action in Dutch.
Why is there no subject (like jij or u) in this sentence?
This is an imperative sentence, meaning it is a command or an instruction. Just like in English, you drop the subject pronoun and start the sentence directly with the verb. The Dutch imperative is simply the stem of the verb, which in this case is kijk.
