Learn Dutch: Wij komen allebei naar het overleg. - We are both coming to the meeting.

Allebei is the most natural, everyday way to say 'both' when used alongside a pronoun like wij. While wij beiden is grammatically correct, it sounds quite formal. You will hear allebei much more often in spoken Dutch.

Could I start the sentence with allebei, like saying 'Both of us are coming'?

In English, 'Both of us' acts as the subject, but in Dutch, you generally cannot start a sentence with allebei. Instead, you use the standard pronoun wij in the first position, put the verb in the second position (komen), and let allebei follow it.

What is the difference between het overleg and de vergadering?

Both can translate to 'the meeting' in English. However, de vergadering usually implies a formal, structured meeting with an agenda. Het overleg translates closer to 'the consultation' or 'deliberation'. It is very commonly used in Dutch workplaces for a collaborative discussion or a smaller catch-up.

Why do we use the preposition naar here?

When you are expressing physical movement towards a destination, event, or person, you use naar. Because the speakers are moving to attend the meeting, naar het overleg is the correct phrasing.
