Questions & Answers about Zij schrijft een groet in de brief.
This lesson is about the indefinite pronoun 'je' (meaning 'one' or 'people in general'). How would we use that here instead of 'Zij'?
You simply replace Zij with Je to make Je schrijft een groet in de brief. Instead of talking about a specific woman, it now means 'You write a greeting...' or 'One writes a greeting...', referring to what people generally do when writing a letter.
Could I use Ze instead of Zij in this sentence?
Yes, both mean 'she'. Zij is the stressed form, used when you want to emphasize that she (and not someone else) is doing the writing. If you don't need that emphasis, Ze schrijft een groet in de brief is completely correct and very common in everyday spoken Dutch.
Is the word groet related to how Dutch speakers say hello?
Exactly! Groet (greeting) is the noun form of the verb groeten (to greet). You might already recognize it from the very common sign-off Groetjes! (Best wishes! / Little greetings!) used at the end of informal letters and emails.
If she writes greetings in multiple letters, what is the plural of de brief?
The plural is de brieven. Notice how the f at the end of brief changes to a v when we add the plural -en ending. This is a very common Dutch spelling rule that makes the pronunciation smoother between vowels.
