Questions & Answers about Iedere redacteur heeft het document goed onderverdeeld.
Why isn't there a ge- in the past participle onderverdeeld?
The verb onderverdelen (to subdivide) is a separable verb made of onder- + verdelen. Normally, separable verbs get a -ge- in the middle for the past participle. However, the base verb here is verdelen, which starts with the unstressed, inseparable prefix ver-. Because verdelen doesn't take a ge- in its own past participle (verdeeld), the combined verb onderverdelen doesn't get one either. You just stick the separable prefix onder- directly onto verdeeld.
How do I know which part of onderverdelen is separable and which is inseparable?
You can usually tell by the pronunciation stress. The prefix onder- is stressed, which tells you it can separate from the rest of the word in a normal present tense sentence. The prefix ver- is never stressed and is always inseparable. When building the past participle, the separable part (onder) simply attaches to the front of the past participle of the inseparable part (verdeeld).
