Why do we use geen ... meer instead of niet ... meer in this sentence?
We use geen because we are negating an indefinite noun (a noun without "the" or "these"). Since bordspellen just means "board games" in general, we must use geen instead of niet. To say we do not do this anymore, we add meer after the noun.
Does meer always go directly after the noun when using geen ... meer?
Generally, yes. The structure groups together as geen + [noun] + meer. It literally translates to "no board games more". Thinking of it this literal way makes the Dutch word order much easier to remember when translating from English.
Look at the spelling of spelen and bordspellen. Why does the noun have a double "l"?
The singular noun is bordspel. Because the "e" in spel is a short vowel, we must double the "l" when adding the plural -en to keep that short sound. If we did not double it, it would be pronounced with a long "e" sound, exactly like the verb spelen (to play) earlier in the sentence!
