Questions & Answers about Zij draagt een roze jurk.
Since jurk is a de word, why doesn't the adjective roze get an extra -e added to it?
Normally, adjectives placed in front of a de word do get an extra -e (for example, rood becomes een rode jurk). However, because roze already ends in an unstressed -e sound, we don't add another one to it. The spelling stays exactly the same.
Does draagt mean "is wearing" or "wears"?
It means both! Dutch does not have a separate "is doing" (continuous) tense like English does. Depending on the context, Zij draagt translates to either "She wears" or "She is wearing."
Can draagt also mean "carries"?
Yes. The verb dragen is used for both "to wear" (for clothing and accessories) and "to carry" (for objects). For example, Zij draagt een tas would mean "She is carrying a bag."
Why use zij instead of ze in this sentence?
Zij is the stressed or emphasized version of ze (she). You would use zij here if you want to emphasize exactly who is wearing the pink dress ("She is wearing a pink dress, not someone else"). If you don't need to emphasize the person, ze is completely fine and very common.
