Questions & Answers about Goedemorgen, mevrouw!
Why is goedemorgen written as one word instead of two?
In Dutch, standard time-based greetings like goedemorgen (good morning), goedemiddag (good afternoon), and goedenavond (good evening) are always written as a single word. You do not put a space between the adjective and the time of day.
I sometimes hear people say "goeiemorgen" without pronouncing the "d". Is that correct?
Yes! In everyday spoken Dutch, the d in goede is very often dropped, making it sound like goeie. You will even see it informally written as goeiemorgen in text messages, though goedemorgen is the official standard spelling.
Is mevrouw used exactly the same way as "Mrs." in English?
Not exactly. While mevrouw means "Mrs." when followed by a last name (like mevrouw Jansen), it is also very commonly used entirely on its own to mean "madam" or "ma'am". It is the standard, polite way to address an adult woman you do not know, like a customer or a stranger.
If I want to say "Good morning, sir!" instead, what word replaces mevrouw?
You would use meneer (sir / Mr.). To greet a man politely, you would say: Goedemorgen, meneer!
