Vind jij de soep lekker?

From Lesson 13:Yes/no questions·Dutch

Questions & Answers about Vind jij de soep lekker?

Why is the verb spelled vind without a -t at the end?
This is a special spelling rule for questions! Normally, "you find" is jij vindt (with a -t). But when you make a yes/no question and the verb comes before jij or je, you drop the -t. So it becomes vind jij.
Where is the word for "Do" in this sentence?
Dutch doesn't use helper words like "do" or "does" to make questions. Instead, it just swaps the order of the subject and the verb. So instead of Jij vindt (You find), you just put the verb first: Vind jij (Find you / Do you find).
Could I say Vind je instead of Vind jij?
Yes! Je and jij both mean "you". Jij is just the stressed version. You use jij here if you want to emphasize the person: "Do you find the soup tasty?" (perhaps someone else didn't). The rule about dropping the -t from the verb works exactly the same for both.
Does lekker only mean "tasty"?
While it means "tasty" or "delicious" when talking about food like soep, lekker is a very popular Dutch word for anything nice or pleasant. You can use it to describe nice weather, a comfortable chair, or even a good night's sleep!
