Starting with "Als"
Like omdat, als is a subordinating conjunction. It kicks the conjugated verb to the end of its clause.
If a sentence starts with an als clause, that entire clause occupies the first position. To satisfy the Dutch "verb second" rule, the main clause must begin immediately with its verb. This results in two verbs sitting right next to each other, separated by a comma.

Main Clause First
You can also place the als clause in the second half of the sentence. The main clause follows normal word order, and the als clause still sends its verb to the very end.
