Formal purpose (opdat)

Preserving Delicate Artifacts

When working with historical archives, items like het perkament (the parchment) are extremely kwetsbaar (fragile).

That parchment is extremely fragile.
Dat perkament is extreem kwetsbaar.

Expressing Purpose with opdat

To state a specific purpose or intention ("so that" or "in order that"), use the conjunction opdat. While zodat is common in everyday speech, opdat is highly formal. It is perfect for official guidelines and strict professional protocols.

Because opdat is a subordinating conjunction, it pushes the verbs in its clause to the very end of the sentence.

We darken the room, so that the parchment remains preserved.
Wij verduisteren de kamer, opdat het perkament behouden blijft.
That display case must be sealed, so that the humidity remains low.
Die vitrine moet verzegeld worden, opdat de vochtigheid laag blijft.

Preventing Damage

You will frequently use opdat to explain actions taken to prevent negative outcomes, such as protecting items from de schimmel (the mold). To describe gradual, chemical, or abstract damage, use the verb aantasten (to damage / to affect).

We wear gloves, so that we do not damage the fragile objects.
We dragen handschoenen, opdat we de kwetsbare voorwerpen niet aantasten.
We seal the room optimally, so that the mold does not affect the parchment.
Wij verzegelen de ruimte optimaal, opdat de schimmel het perkament niet aantast.

Strictly following these procedures allows an institution to waarborgen (to guarantee or safeguard) the quality of its archives. This formal verb pairs naturally with the official tone of opdat.

The employee must check the humidity, so that we guarantee the quality.
De medewerker moet de vochtigheid controleren, opdat wij de kwaliteit waarborgen.
