To say that two things or people share an equal quality (like being "as tall as" or "as smart as"), Dutch has two common structures.
Even ... als (As ... as)
Place even (equally / as) before the adjective and als (as) after it.
| My brother is as handsome as my father. | Mijn broer is even knap als mijn vader. |
| This teacher is as nice as the doctor. |
You can use this with any adjective, including personality traits like eigenwijs (stubborn) or actief (active).
| The girl is as stubborn as the boy. |
Net zo ... als (Just as ... as)
Another common way to express equality is net zo ... als ("just as [adjective] as"). It is completely interchangeable with even ... als.
| Are you just as shy as I am? | Ben jij net zo verlegen als ik? |
| My new colleague is just as serious as the boss. |
| These boys are just as lazy as the cat. |
Comparing Actions
You can also use these structures as adverbs to compare how an action is performed.
| Are you going to work as seriously tomorrow as today? | Gaan jullie morgen even serieus werken als vandaag? |
| I am going to exercise just as actively as you. |
