Distributive determiners (elke, iedere)

Every and Each: Elk and Ieder

To say "every" or "each" in Dutch, use elk or ieder. They mean the same thing and are used interchangeably.

Like adjectives, they change their form depending on the gender of the noun they modify.

For de-words, like de deelnemer (the participant) or de medewerker (the employee), add an -e: elke or iedere.

Every participant is present today.
Iedere deelnemer is vandaag aanwezig.
Every employee in this company is unique.
Elke medewerker in dit bedrijf is uniek.

For het-words, like het document or het type, use the base form without an -e: elk or ieder.

Every document is checked by the boss.
Elk document wordt door de baas gecontroleerd.
Every type of document is mandatory here.
Ieder type document is hier verplicht.

This pattern holds true even when you add adjectives between the determiner and the noun.

Every present employee must set up a chair.
Iedere aanwezige medewerker moet een stoel klaarzetten.

Paying attention to elk(e) and ieder(e) is a great way to reinforce your memory of Dutch noun genders!
